Tom certainly does seem to have a vested interest.
I not only wouldn't be surprised, but fully expect, that
Microsoft people - either on assignment or from
quasi-religious fervor - regularly drop by to help "move
the troops along" and perpetuate the myth of "upgrading".

I've started looking into WINE. Interesting stuff.
On the down side, it's still in beta. (The first time I
saw it was in 1999!) It also seems to have all the
typical Linux disadvantages: gigantic bytage,
arcane command lines and tips needed for things
to *actually* work...and more programmers
interested in running games than in serious,
useful software.

On the other hand, it's an intriguing approach.
Apparently the Win32 API has actually been, in large
part, translated to Linux libraries, and there are
places online to get details about installing such
things as IE6!
I've had Mandrake installed for years. I never use
it much but occasionally update the version. :) With the
WINE people offering guidance I think that I'm going
to at least look into this. At this point, running my
software on WINE in 2007 sounds more realistic
(and more palatable) than running it on Vista.
