One other thing to note is that unless you are doing your "full restore"
from a "get back to the out of box state" CD that was delivered with your
system then you need to do a few other things as well. If you are going to
reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows from a Win98 CD (rather than
from your "recovery CD" that was supplied when you bought your computer) you
need to write down as much info as you can (before you start) about your
graphics card and your sound card and your modem. You'll find all this data
in various places in the Control Panel applet. You need to write down the
exact make and model of your video card and your sound card and your modem
(if it is an old fashioned telephone modem) so that you can install the
appropriate drivers after you have reinstalled Windows. The video card will
work of course as soon as you reinstall Windows, but it is likely to be
working at the "bog standard" low resolution setting with no hardware
acceleration. That's usually easy to fix though because you can download (or
otherwise aquire) the current driver for your video card and get it going
very easily at its full performance. The sound card also usually gives you
no problems. The standard telephone modem however is very different, and it
can be quite difficult to get it up and running again. That doesn't matter
too much though, because you can buy a new modem (complete with driver disc)
for next to nothing at most local computer stores. If you have some other
type of modem though you usually won't have a problem.
