Hello Mike,

When eTrust ran it found two infected files ibm00001.exe that is almost
certainly a part of ViaVoice, IBM's voice recognition program that I'm sorry
to say didn't work for me so I uninstalled it. It's just possible that stuff
remains and this file is part of that left over stuff. Then it listed a file
called sp.dll that looks very much like it is part of eMbedded Visual
Studio(capital M) that I use to program a PocketPc, a HP Jornada 545 now
very old, in eVB 3.0 also now old and out of date. eVB is Visual Basic for
handhelds. So I reinstalled eMbedded Visual Studio and when I went to
Outlook Express all went well and I didn't get the wndow signalling an
error. Not only that I went to Google(www.google.ie ) just now and lo and
behold it looks like all is well there too. With this infernal virus it I
could get to Google but it would stall towards the end of the set up process
and hang for a lengthy period. This didn't happen this time round! Yippee!
I'm 52 and shouldn't use language like this- Yippee!.
In addition the PC is booted up normally instead of the screen I was ending
up with. I was figuring the virus was corrupting my system more and more
with each boot.
I realise companies are trying to sell antivirus software and I don't feel
too bad about that. I haven't used protection for years because I confine
myslf to techie sites or sites of an educational or informative nature. I
deviated just once and ventured into a area that wasn't porn but was not on
my usual beaten track and got stung. I've learned a great lesson provided
with the help of the free eTrust scan I've been able to fix things up.
Fingers crossed. A friend of mine I worked with in the University of
Connecticut in 1988 and who lives in his home in New York state told me he
typed in "J Lo's ass" -I'd write "J Lo's derriere" so as not to offend and
he told me his PC went bananas finding that his PC was swamped with stuff he
couldn't control.
If all goes well I will take the advice of www.excid.com who told me to get
the MS updates I need and provided eTrust isn't too expensive I will
probably go ahead and buy it. If this works out now I am very grateful to
them for the free test that may have led to a successful solution to this
infernal virus. Believe me I could use words other than infernal to describe
this virus but out of respect for you and the group I will not.
It was very interesting to hear you say that many viruses are not too bad
but others can be bad. I may have gotten off lightly this time and if you
see a window slowly drifting down a screen in front of text you are trying
to read don't click on the cross or off sign. It's fake and once one clicks
on this or anywhere on that window the virus will be activated. I was within
a whisker of leaving that site but instead took the bait and got hooked. I
can't work out what motivates hackers. Is it about having a feeling of power
and wielding that power in a bad way knowing they will at the present time
never get caught?
I'm about to try to finish off downloading and installing the reat of MS's
security updates and hope all goes well. I have a six year old Compaq
Presario 5410 350Mhz that is simply great but I'm about to buy a new HP
Compaq SR1519UK from PC World within a week or two. Still I would love to
upgrade the BIOS of the 5410 and after a long time passing configure the
20Gigs HDD as the master drive that is now in the slave connection. I
attempted this once before but got scared off at the last moment. I almost
certainly need a BIOS upgrade anyway to do this even if Seagate, the HDD's
manufacturer says it's DiscWizard will take care of that. I have Wimdows
98SE and it seems to have healed itself over the years. This is probably
nonsense but maybe not. I try not to stress the system as much as possible
by going backwards through a sequence of windows rather than dismissing the
whole lot at one click.
I hope to have your program up and running soon and promise to let you know
how I get on and that's a promise I will keep.

Best Wishes,

Peter.
