Another possibility: in 5.5, I have occasionally seen this behavior if
there is a timer that's running. I've only seen it on Windows, and as a
result, tend to set the Mode of any timers I'm using to 0 before
quitting the app.

What's interesting is that when I've seen this happen, the app appears
to have quit--no windows or any other visual indication that the app
exists remain, but the Task Manager still shows the app running.
