<snip>My advice is not to use RB to do this...
You may safely ignore this troll. If you take a quick glance at his
posts on this newsgroup, you will see what I mean. He obviously has a
personal agenda against REAL Software, and therefore is unable to offer
an objective opinion.
To respond to your original post, I think REALbasic makes a fine SQL
front end. If you did your job right, you can really use anything for
your front end: from involved C++ to complicated Java to a Visual Basic
client to REALbasic. In my opinion, when you have a choice of options
like this, why not choose the easiest one?
RB's databasing capabilities get more advanced with the Pro version,
but if all you want to do is slap a simple GUI on top of a pre-built
database engine, you will probably find that the Standard Edition is
sufficient. RB's cross-platform capabilities may come in handy if you
wish to distribute the client to a number of different customers,
whilst keeping the database on a remote server.
RB is easy enough that you can download the trial version and rapidly
put something quick together to see if it gets you where you want to
go. If it is not, you can then discard the RB client and go to another
tool with little delay, since you do not need a big investment time to
evaluate REALbasic.
To counter one final issue rsshoulddie made: you certainly do not have
to hide the fact that you used REALbasic (if you decide to do so).
That attitude has decended from the days when the Basic programming
language was viewed as learning language and wasn't taken seriously by
many professionals. That has changed a great deal, primarily thanks to
Microsoft's Visual Basic (the inspiration behind REALbasic). VB has
made Basic a very serious language in which both casual and
professional developers alike can create powerful applications. You
can think of REALbasic as the "Macintosh equivalent" to Visual Basic.
Get luck on your endeavors, however you choose to proceed.
