Can it read .ram files (RealPlayer files)?
No, so you got me there. But the reason why this is so, I think, is because of
patent issues. WMP can't play QuickTime files either. But this is actually
supporting my point that an actual working ActiveX implementation is not an
option. I believe there is a RealPlayer ActiveX control also, though it
probably won't work in RB any better than the WMP control does.
For instance, WMV files cannot be read using QuickTime (I'm looking for
a way to convert them since I don't have Media Player).
Yes, this is a problem for Mac users. There are all kinds of format converters
out there, but even if you find one that works, it takes a long time to
convert one large movie. A serious movie collector needs a Windows box - there
is a Windows version of QuickTime, but no Mac versoin of Windows Media Player.
Well, QuickTime can play AVIs (Some AVIs require a codec).
The last time I researched this I found that QT can play some Windows Media
files made years ago, but not newer files. And, yes, *most* AVI files being
made these days require codecs such as Divx and AC3. But this isn't really
important to an RB app. If somebody has built a serious media library, they
will have all of these things installed already.
Well... Don't forget that RB is a cross platform environment. They have
many things that should be improved.
There isn't much chance of me forgetting that, to say the least. As I was
making one of my example projects, I needed to write a one-line method. I was
trying to paste a line of code and the damn thing wouldn't work. I had to open
a text docutment, paste the code there, copy it and then was finally able to
paste it into RB.
RB2006 has a code editor that cannot edit code! I'll bet RS has paid out a ton
of refunds. In the open-source world RB2006 wouldn't even be considered beta-quality.
