How the heck to customize the keyboard?

In Dyalog, I hate the fact that when I hit the left alt key to access
a symbol, I get an obnoxious beep, and it doesn't work. Rather, it
wants me to hit the right alt. This is the altgr keyboard. Switching
to the ctrl keyboard doesn't help matters, as I still cannot hit the
left alt.
I have tried everything I know to try on my own to get the keyboard to
allow me to hit the left alt. shortcuts don't seem to help.
Customizing a Comfort On-Screen Keyboard doesn't help. I even went
into APLX and found what I suppose is a "keyboard map" to try to use
within Dyalog (the APLX keyboard works just fine for me), but of
course the formats are different so it didn't work.
I find this extremely irritating. Does anyone know how the heck to
get Dyalog to just let one hit the left alt key to enter a symbol?
