For Google ads, even if your browser doesn't show them, they are

This is news to me; I find it hard to believe, or at least to understand.
Are you sure this is true? Why would they be downloaded if my browser
hasn't requested them? I think the circumstances where my browser doesn't
display ads or images, but requests them anyway, are rare.

As far as I know, the problem about page is how things works. it seems you
can't tell what you want to receive and what not. You ask a page, then you
receive the content. How a browser may tell to a server not to get a content
he doesn't even know the existence ?
I know you can block images. Maybe the browser receive the content then must
ask for the images separately, but as I know, it only works with images.
Maybe you can block content from some URL. In this case the "blocked"
content is replaced by a blank space so it may be shown faster.
Please let me know wich browser do you use so I may try to see if the ads
are downloaded and shown. I use Firefox but couldn't find this feature.
One way in FireFox is to right-click on the Google ads image, and select
"Block images from..." in the contextual menu.
Another way is via the Preferences -> Content tab. Click on the
"Exceptions" button for the "Load images automatically" item.
As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, you can also block domains
explicitly using something called a hosts file on your computer.
There are a number of "how to" articles available by googling...
.
Best Regards.
