[Verdana] It's been around forever, no OS I know of doesn't come with
it. It's far more attractive than Arial for massed text. Tahoma and
Geneva have similar issues as Verdana.
Then it is obvious your knowledge is limited to MS Windows. I will
spell it out for you, there are systems out there without *any* of
fonts that you have listed. My Kubuntu & Mandrake boxes have neither
the oversized MS fonts Verdana & Tahoma, the Ubuntu box has only a
Verdana because the MS core TT fonts are installed, I cannot speak
for other distros.

I'll confirm that (K)Ubuntu standard systems do not have Verdana,
Tahoma, and other Windows fonts installed on a standard setup. The users
would have to specifically go to the package manager and look for the
somewhat cryptic 'msttcorefonts' and tick the Install box. If they knew
they should do that...

And the real point here is as the design of websites as opposed to graphic design for print, you cannot *force* the font upon the user|viewer|consumer

If you decide to use an oversized font for your design and then impose a reduction in the style*** to compensate for this font incorrect scale, then you are making a fundamental error in usability in web design. The web is *not* paper. And as web content delivery expands to more devices this will be even *more* a factor, not less. Back in the early web when there was only one web browser and one device, a computer, you could get away with such design flaws. The future will not have such latitude. The 'commercial' sites held up as 'proof' only demonstrate the problem and power of legacy.
