Thanks for the pointer, I certainly missed the obvious :)
I now have a general prototype here:

This works fine in most web browsers ( Firefox, Safari, Opera ), but
not in Internet Explorer 6, since it seems to do everything like no
one. What I find is that the scroll bars are displayed, for the right-
hand pane, but not when using IE6 (I can't confirm the behaviour with
IE7). Does anyone have an suggestions on how to get it to display
correctly in this case?
