Can anyone tell me where to find reliable (and regularly updated) data
on the most commonly used browsers for PCs, Macs, and handheld devices?

I am finishing a website and would like to know what most web designers
are supporting. I'd also like to know where I can look every 6 months or
so to see emerging trends in internet access.

For instance, iPhones and other G3 devices are increasingly common. I
don't imagine too many people are in a position of using such devices
_INSTEAD_ of computers yet but, perhaps, one day they will be. I'd like
to know a good spot to reliably watch for that trend developing.

It would be useful to be able to keep up with the market. I may not
worry about how my customer's website looks in an iPhone today but it
might be very important by this time next year.

Why produce a web page that caters for a specific set of "browsers".
Produce one that caters for *all* browsers and you never have to worry
again.

I can make a page today that "works" in Netscape 4, insofar as the text
and images will appear, albeit with no styling whatsoever. It may be
hideous. The question is whether I want to make any effort so the page
will appear in Netscape 4 the way I want it to appear, as I do to make it
appear as I want it to in IE7 and Firefox 3. The answer is No, it has been
years since I have made any effort at all to make a web page look any
particular way in any version of Netscape.

Exactly. There are almost certainly a few people out there running IE2 but I
don't think it's realistic to support that browser. In fact, I can't think
of any way to make that work without dumping virtually all the features we
love in newer browsers. You'd be back to text and pictures in jpg/gif format
only. And frames. And all that other old stuff that we've basically
relegated to the olden days.
