I've been using Hot Dog Pro as my Web page editor for years.
Recently I had to move things to another hard drive. Hot Dog
Pro 6.6 now wants me to register it. So I dug out all of the
registration and ID keys and plugged them in. It looked like it
was going all right but then the software couldn't reach the
Sausage server.
http://www.hotdogpro.com/hotdog-professional.html
seems to work for me.
There is a link there for registered users to download the 6.6
version for those who have deleted it from their computers:
ftp://ftp.sausage.com/pub/hotdog/hotdog6/hotdog66install.exe
Their site states: "All of the products listed on this page are
not for sale. They are available here for registered users only.
If you purchased an older copy of HotDog Professional and have
deleted it from your system this is where you can download it
from. You will require your registration details to register
these products."
Does anyone have an idea of how I could get my software to
unlock itself despite the fact that the authentication server
seems to be permanently inaccessible?
I'm not sure if the above info is enough or if the downloaded
version will again try to access their servers. There is a link
for getting help with the program:
http://www.sausagesupport.com/help/
You can create a help ticket there, but as you noted, the page
seems somewhat out of date. You could try doing a search for
abandonware, but most of those types of sites specialize in
games.
I've got a lot invested in this software and I'd like to be
able to keep using it.
It may be time to make the switch to a more current editor,
regardless of your investment. Sometimes it just isn't worth
sticking with a piece of software, especially when you begin to
feel as if you are the only user left. (I'm not suggesting you
are the only Hot Dog Pro user out there; just that you might be
feeling that way.)
There are several excellent free programs available with large
user communities in active development.
jEdit
Notepad++
Arachnophilia
Nvu
jEdit and Arachnophilia are Java programs and Nvu is Mozilla
based. I believe they all support macros and templates. If that
is what you mean by having a lot invested in Hot Dog Pro, well,
there won't be any easy way around recoding all of that stuff
again. But it should at least be possible.
Hope this helps.
