because doctype sniffing happens to matter in this case. The difference
between my suggestion and your solution is that mine works quite
consistently in quite all more or less contemporary UA's and degrades
acceptably if not (read: IE5/Mac and IE6 in 'standards compliance' mode
would calculate the sizes relative to the contents). Yours would cause
a vertical scrollbar in iCab and IE6 in 'standards compliance' mode.
