millions of websites?

Figure *what* out, exactly? Different websites often exist at the same IP
address and websites frequently serve different content in the "www"
subdomain. Here are some random examples:
http://www.ritualistic.com = 69.17.116.118
http://www.steveforman.com = 69.17.116.118
http://www.com != http://www.www.com
Google has no way of telling if you ever plan to serve different content in
these domains, so it's indexed them both.

alt.internet.search-engines is a good place to ask questions about search
engines. And if you have a question about the functioning of your web host's
servers, perhaps you could try asking your web host.
