Linux based TIFF resampling

I've tried in vain to get ImageMagick to work reliably in trying to
resample TIFF images (G4 compression) to a different resolution...
Basically, I have a series of architectural images, bitonal, ranging in
paper size from 18x24 inches to 36x48 inches or larger, all scanned
from originals at 400 dpi.
Unfortunately, I need those images at 300, and wanted to create a batch
process on a Linux machine that would resample those down to 300x300
dpi. Using any of the IM tools with a resample takes forever if it is
even able to do the job... Memory usage is enormous, and the process
is simply extremely slow.
I am at a loss... I can't do a simple resize, because I don't know the
sizes of the files in advance - the rendered image on the page still
needs to be the same size as the original...
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!
Kris
