Re: Indexing -- Edit Topics List

>Do you mean what you get when you go to Utilities > Show Index ?

No, I mean when you are in the Index Entry window, and you hit the
Topics button to bring up the list of topics you have created for the
publication. You can then Import all the topics from the book list and
select your index entry from those for the word you have marked to
point to. Then you don't have to type the words for every new index
entry. It is this Topics List I am referring to -- that I would like to
be able to edit it -- when I say edit, I mean to change a word, such as
changing Electronic piano to Digital piano, so that all the index
markers tied to Electronic piano now point to the same topic, but it
has been renamed Digital piano. I don't think there is a way to do it.
>>From your replies I have the impression you are not aware of the Topics
List. It is an option, a very useful one, for doing indexing of a large
publication like a book.

PageMaker 7.0.2

There doesn't appear to be a way to edit the index topics list, for
instance if you find later you misspelled one of the words in the
topic. Looks like you can only add a new topic, then re-assign index
entries to that new topic. Anyone find that this is otherwise?

I think that for short text that might be the easiest way, but you
could export each story as tagged text, and do a search/replace on
that, then place it back into the file.

A tagged text entry for an index item would appear something like
this:

<*INDEX 1 1 0 0 0 ("More" "" "")>Moore

so you'd do a search in the text filr for something like ("More"

If you had a long book and mostly in one text block that might just
possibly be a timesaver.

Other possibilities, with a list of the page entries, go to each page,
select the type including that word (or a substantial part of the
page), hit Control-E to open the story editor with that text selected.
Look for the index marker (which is a black rectangle with a white
diamond in it) select that and hit Control-Y to open the index entry
dialog and change the spelling.

Again, I'm not sure that would save ant time over your own suggestion.

Gordon, if I understand your suggestions correctly, you are describing
ways to edit the index entries. I want to edit the topics list.

Do you mean what you get when you go to Utilities > Show Index ?

However that is again editing individual entries but they are
presented in a collated format.
