Look at BNR http://www.liquiddreamsolutions.com/. Used it here for years,
good updates for latest releases of LW, easy setup and update feature for
new plugins etc. You can group machines and split frames over your network.
Works with a linux server which is great for 10 machines or more (a
limitation of XP). You can update your client machines automatically and
set them up to run from startup so theres no need to access all your
machines to get them ready. It has options for slower networks for step
loading too. No need for config files or lightwave on every machine, it
deals with that from your controller machine. You don't actually need
lightwave present at all apart from initial setup so it can run away from
your workstation on another network.

I need to set up some form of network rendering with 8.5. I have

Lightwave has to be installed on all of the other computers, or just the
LWSN file/program?
All you have to do is to make sure all computers can access LWSN
and belonging files (config, plug-ins).
Are there any other nework rendering options for LW that don't require so
many processes to set up?
LightNet - http://www.joejustice.org/lightwave/lightnet
LightNet is free and somewhat easy to setup.
I've been using it for years and can recommend it - I'm currently looking
into alternative distrubutors as my needs require a more robust software.
Muster - http://www.vvertex.com
Muster is pretty good and easier to setup than LightNet - It has
good features but is a commercial product.
Deadline - http://software.franticfilms.com/index.aspx?page=deadline
I've been trying out the demo (tried the Muster demo too) and so far this
is the easiest and best render distributor I have ever laid my hands on.
The overall features are compareable to Muster, but yet it seems more
solid and functional.
Had a few words with Frantic Films - seems it will support single frame
distribution soon - thats a good thing in my book :)
