Re: Lightwave across a LAN and AV Problem (not Firewall)

Hi,

If it's truly a router, chances are good that it has built in firewalling. When I was on dialup, I used PC-Cillin's firewall because it made it easy to see whatever traffic it was catching. From the minute I dialed up to the minute I hung up, it would be logging all sorts of attempts to browse my drives and other nefarious IP crap.

No it's not my router, sorry I don't think my post was the clearest - I unplug my router when I render on the LAN so that I am not online. However I will go anc check my routers firewall - been meaning to check out its credentials for a while. I have to admit I have plug and played it and kept my software firewall in place.

As soon as I disable the Active Shield bit the problem dissapears.

By the way, I've disabled all that realtime AV scanning. I figure if I scan my drives, there's no reason why the files have to be scanned again everytime I move or copy them

In theory, if all incoming email is scanned and all downloads are scanned then I might get away without the real-time scanning also. I am not clear whether I can get my AV software to not scan the internal LAN but scan everything from outside it.

YMMV, so do what you think is best. I'd hate to discover that somebody's entire network was trashed because they turned off their realtime AV on my recommendation.

What I think is best is that we round up all the people who make these virii in the first place and then stick them all on an Island just before we send in Kurt Russel!

No worries - I won't sue :)

Cheers
Steve
