It's you. :) Nodes are far more powerful than Layers and you can drive any variable from virtually any other node. Like altering the rotation of a texture based on its occlusion and other bizarre stuff like that.

They've got new shading models in there too if you watch closely, native support for Subsurface scattering, OrenNayar, velvet shading, anisotropic specularity etc.
