Hey Mark,
I've sort of been following this thread and I'm wondering if you've some other issue going on with your system.
I'm using Norton's System tools on 3 networked systems (two XP Pro using System Tools 2005, one Win2000 using System Tools 2003), and I've never encountered anything that could be construed as 'system bogging'. It adds a bit of time at log-on perhaps, but after that it's quite transparent.
My broadband connection is to a cable modem then to a hardware router (NetGear). For extra protection, I use non-routable IP addresses on each system (in this case addresses starting at 192.0.0.X), along with Zone Alarm Pro. There's a free version of Zone Alarm too: http://www.zonelabs.com.
I've one "problem" system that will run solidly for months, then inexplicably crap on itself when I fire it up then next morning. I keep a current Ghost archive of this system.
Last month, that's exactly what happened but when I performed the restore from an archive only 10 days old, there were system problems. I ran Norton's Disk Doctor from the Recovery Disk and it found fragments and made some fixes, but there were still issues when I started up XP. Primarily, the system would be "on hold" so to speak for 1-2 minutes. The HD would go into a 1/4 sec activity pulse every 1/2 sec, then clear up and proceed as if nothing was wrong. I ran Norton's disk utilities again but from XP, but it didn't find any problems.
I then ran SpinRite 6.0 (www.grc.com/spinrite.htm) in Mode 4. This was a 6-7 hour process, but in the end it had found add'l corrupted files on 3 partitions. It converts then to a found.000 folder with the previously corrupted files below it. Upon firing up XP afterwards, I now had some apps that wouldn't launch of course, but the drive's "pulsing" issue was gone. At that point however, I reperformed the Ghost restore and it worked as it was supposed to this time.
Basically, I'd been restoring to a drive that still had corruption. SpinRite corrected the corruption & reconditioned the drive.
In short, perhaps Norton is getting blamed for something else happening that's being well disguised.
Just a thought.

I can think of why they're getting sooo many problems, is because they
always make the same misstake of installing the Norton Firewall.
I NEVER install ANY OTHER firewall.
I just use XP's which hasn't failed me yet.
Everytime I hear about someone having problems with Norton, I find out they had the Firewall installed.
Don't install that, and everything works just fine,,, other then using up more resources.
Mark, do you have multiple systems networked together via a router?
if so, your router most likely has a wirewall already built in, and you can even free up xp's firewall. Hardware firewalls are even harder to get through the software ones. So, according to what you say, my router, (a LinkSys) that I do have and is hooked up,
just not to any other computers yet, IS the firewall and not the sucurity software that came with it?
I've never used window's firewalls at all since I got my linksys router. And this will work!!!????
Man, I've had a friggin worm attack my system before, and it came in
from NOT having a firewall program setup, like XP or whatever.
As I was always under the impression (back then) that a virus
could ONLY come through via email, I was of course wrong.
So, where can I go to read up on something like this?
And "why" would they give you extra software, if the
LinkSys device does all your protection?
Am I truely this ignorant?
Apperantly so LOL
Thanx for the info.
BTW, so far I haven't had to install ANY Norton stuff at all yet,
though I feel weird, because I got used to just clicking on the
One Button CleanUp button in Norton System Works,
which did everything in one click.
Yes, the way I talk, you'd think I still want Norton, but I truely did and do like the way it worked,
but frig, that thing also slowed my system way down, I know this, because when I uninstalled it the other day,
I seen massive speed improvements overall, and also it was almost like Norton was a virus of sorts, as once
it's installed, there is NOOOOO turning back or getting rid of any of the left overs, no matter what you try!!!
So, any ideas for a decent defragger?
thanx...............md :)
