Disappointment!

My main workstation (a dual Xeon 2.8) has an ATI FireGL2 installed;
and seeing as how, for some reason, it seems that every new job I get
has twice as much polygons as the previous one, the card is beginning
to show its limits. So I went shopping and, not wanting to dish out
the insulting amount of cash required for a Quadro (the latest ATI FGL
cards I bought are far from satisfying) I came back with a 6800GT.

My benchmark was simple: a 1.5 million polys scene, no bitmap
textures, loaded in layout with everything set to shaded w/ wireframe,
a single light and no other OGL effects.

Well, to cut it short: the 6800GT was unusable. Apart from a
noticeable degradation of the display quality, both in colour and
sharpness, it is actually *slower* than the GL2 - a card that's 3
years old - and I don't mean slightly slower, I mean it just won't
move, while the ATI card - struggling, sure - actually gives some
decent feedback.

I put the 6800 in my "gaming" machine, replacing a Radeon9200, and in
*that* case it did what it should, outperforming the rival both in
display quality and speed. But for LW I guess I'll have to start
saving, unless one of you informed guys can come up with a "it's
because you didn't do *that*, dumbo!" solution.
