I think once you switch to a good LCD monitor, you'll be very glad you did. I've three of them and will replace the last CRT with one once it expires. But as with ANY video display, use the highest refresh rate that the monitor & video card can support. You want at least 75 Hz and not the default 60 Hz, so make sure you have a video card that can handle the color depth for the screen size and refresh rate. Most these days can.
Many folk can't tell if a monitor is set to 60 Hz when looking straight on. But most, if instructed to look away and only see part of it in their peripheral, can then see the flicker quite clearly.
