OK, after asking a lot of questions on this subject over at the CG-Talk forum, I now have a better idea of what's what.
Basically, from what I gather, I should be just fine with building the 64bit system I want, I just need to stick with the
regular version (32bit) of XP Pro and not go for the 64bit XP, as that's where you run into problems with
other programs and hardware drivers and such not being able to run or work yet.
But I've been told for, now at least, I can run the normal XP with this setup just fine and still reap benifits.
Later down the road, I can jump to the full-on 64XP when more apps comply and more drivers comply.
So, I'm going ahead with my order as it stands and hope for the best.
Either way, I know that things are moving in the 64bit direction anyway, so I won't have a system I can't use.
And even without using the 64XP, I "will" see performance increases in pretty much everything.
And 4 gigs of RAM sure won't hurt :)
And all my drives will be SATA.
I should be thee happy camper...................md :)

Hi Mark,
I think you are probably right to be a little concerned about going to a 64bit OS - as you say there are limited 64 bit apps at present and all your devices will need 64 bit drivers - everything. So I would recommend you check this out for every piece of non-generic kit you have/will have.
My personal thinking is that when I go dual core I will get a big jump in speed anyway (CPUs are faster than my existing one and I get two of them for rendering), I will get 2 CPUs allowing me to do some serious multi-tasking (rendering and playing UT :) - gotta be done) and so I will see a big benefit.
I will most likely leave WinX64 for now but jump to Vista 64 in a year, 18 months time when it comes out. 64bit and a nice new OS - I have to admit I really enjoy moving to brand new generation OS's when they arrive (ayyy - I remember Win 1 > 3.1 > 95/98 > NT > XP - good days every one of them!!)
LW 64bit will be faster no doubt - but until we know how much faster then it's all guesswork (unless I've missed something). We should now in the next 4 weeks as far as I can tell.
As I have got older I find myself becoming more of a user than a technician (not even going to build my own PC this time) - want to spend my time doing stuff rather than tinkering / persuading the thing to work.
Having said all that I do think there is a rapidly increasing desire for 64 bit and maybe it will happen faster than most people think. I dunno - not 100% decided myself yet - I'm 75% XP 25% X64. The techy in me really wants to go 64!!!
Hope that makes sense - just got back from the pub so I maybe slurring my typing :)
Kind regards Steve
