It depends on your package management system, but getting a build
environment set up for GIMP can be as easy as
apt-get build-dep gimp

Yes, because someone else has done all the work for you :)
The hardest (or at least most time-consuming) part of building GIMP on
Windows is to get your build environment set up.

clicked on the .exe and it installed itself. Why can't this be done on
linux? If installing software is difficult in an operating system then imho
people are not going to use it much.
