First time installation of GIMP on Mac

Hi everybody
I just found this group so pardon me if this has been mentioned in the past.
I just recently learned about Gimp while checking out the site of the
ESA Mars Express mission. It is recommended that to view files for the
mission, along with other Mars missions such as Mars Global Surveyor,
Mars Odyssey, Pathfinder, etc., that Gimp is the best program to use.
There is a plugin available that can be used to destripe images taken by the
Mars Global Surveyor mission. I downloaded what I believe is all the relevant
files necessary to install the program on a Mac. Now, right off the bat, I have to say,
I have had no experience whatsoever in installing Linux-based programs. When I
started reading about Gimp, it was also the first time I heard about Terminal, X11,
Fink, DarwinPorts, etc. etc. And when I started determining that a lot of the procedures
involved using “write-in commands” in a Terminal window, and in X11 and so forth,
it got really downright confusing for me to figure out. I also get the impression that with
Fink and DarwinPorts, it automatically downloads and installs everything you need on your
Mac by going directly to the source where the files are located on the internet. I am trying
to avoid that at all cost. I only have dialup and it would probably take forever to go that route.
But no matter what I would do, it just doesn’t install properly. It isn’t installing in the location
that is suppose to be in. I can’t install the plugin (unlike Windows, where you just download
the plugin and place it in the plugin folders, it seems like that you can only install plugins for
the Mac). I’ve used Fink to try to install the downloaded files directly and it was very confusing
for me to use and it didn’t install Gimp in the /sw folder. In fact, it didn’t install at all. What I ended
up doing is simply double-clicking on the Gimp installer and it just installed in my Application
folder and it works like that, but unfortunately, I can’t install plugins which I need in order to
view and examine .img files. I can view files created in another program, that is, I’ve taken
an img file, opened it in another program, saved it as a tiff file, and then I can open the file in
Gimp and do whatever I want with it, namely, using the destripe option in the filters. But I would
prefer to open an img file directly in Gimp. I’ve searched the internet, looking for install
documentations and can’t seem to find any that is easy to understand. 2 places that I’ve sent
e-mails to concerning their CD’s of Gimp (where you just double-click to install and
5 minutes later, you got a perfectly running copy of Gimp on the Mac) have not responded to my
inquiries. I do not know if these CD’s would enable me to install plugins or not. Can somebody
out there direct me to a site where I can get a step-by-step, easy to understand, no nonsense
procedure in installing Gimp on the Mac. Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve downloaded all the files
necessary, but how do I go about installing all these files on my Mac properly?
I can’t figure out how to do that with Fink or DarwinPorts. I see a bunch of tar files everywhere
but how do I go about installing them? And what about plugins? How do I go about installing
them? All I really want to do is install a working copy of Gimp on my Mac, install
the pds_mac plugin, and off I go. How good are the CD’s?
I would greatly appreciate any response that anyone can give.
Paul .
