From what I've observed since taking up photogrammetry six months ago, the
relative merits of quaternions versus matrices, euler angles, etc., seems
to be subject to perpetual discussion. I suppose it's just a reflection
of folk coming up to speed.

The article below is a good read. Chapter 4 is devoted to comparing the
utility of Matrices, Euler Angles, and Quaternions.
