So providing I have only uniform scales I can do the following<snip>
Yes, uniform scaling is not a problem. I allow that at all nodes
in my transformation hierarchy.
Is it easy to get your artists to stay away from the non-uniform
scales?
I cannot speak for everyone who has used artists. I had contracted
one to build my "castle" data set, asking for only uniform scales,
no reflections, and set it up for automatic portalization. None of this
happened. I also contracted one, who has significant experience
building models for games, to build a biped character. He assured
me no uniform scales and no reflections. The model had both. Not
being really good with modeling packages, I had to postprocess the
data sets to satisfy the requirements of my graphics engine.
Maybe just the luck of the draw...
