this works a lot better on some newsgroups than it does others, but then
again each newsgroup seems to have its own culture. better probably to stick
to groups where this style of posting is more the norm...
then, there are ones that tend to be more harsh, which I typically avoid
after realizing that, even if one is on-topic and asking a clearly defined
question, the people will still flame (skimming through messages on those
groups reveal that a majority of the responses tend to be flames).
it seems to have something to do with the percieved "practicality" (or,
worse, "prestige") of the subject matter, eg, "practical" or "prestigious"
topics tend to have unpleasant newsgroups (here is not so bad really),
wheras groups where the subject matter has little chance of being useful
(or, where for example, about as soon as someone mentions actually trying to
make money off it, the flames kick up), I seem to get along better (maybe, I
can't tell).
so, it is like: hobbyist vs. academic vs. commercial, with a natural set of
ideological differences and built in oppositions between these groups.
or something...
here seems to be biased in the 'commercial' direction afaict, eg, many of
the people seem to have some sort of intent in being involved somehow with
commercial game development or making money somehow, or expect similar of
others, rather than, eg, focusing on the enjoyment/experience of the
projects themselves, or on the particular algorithms or theories involved in
said projects.
this time, I had figured I maybe had a reason to post here, but I guess not
in retrospect.
