Re: Question regarding MacFonts

Do you mean http://www.macware.com/site/products/MacFonts/overview.htm ? Unlike mail adresses, there is no reason for spamprotecting URLs ;-)

Oops, I inadvertently truncated "html" to "htm"

... I did a quick check via Font Book and those fonts I examined all had copyright information and were attributed to different sources. What follows is a list of a quick listing of the names of some of the fonts on the CD: Aliens, Almonte, Almonte Snow, Almonte Woodgrain, Alpha Beta BRK, Amalgamate BRK, Amalgamate O BRK, AmericanCheese, Amplitude BRK, Anglepoise Lampshade, Angstrom, Anklepants, Antelope H, Antimony Blue, antiestablishment.

Just now, after having written the preceding paragraph I went to the website for MacFonts and found the following which states that the fonts are for personal use only...

The fonts are probably these: <http://www.macxware.com/pdf/MacFonts.pdf>
(URL in <> for your convenience). These are the usual bunch of free fonts availabe on the web (sites like <www.dafont.com> <www.1001freefonts.com> <www.urbanfonts.com> and others). Some of them are completely free, others for non-commercial use only. That is in all probability the reason why Macware says they are for personal use only. Some of them are and they don't take the trouble of checking for each of them.

30 bucks is a lot of money for them considering you can download them for free. On www.fontfreak.com you can even download the whole collection of 5,000 fonts in one zip file. Most of these fonts have a number of problems so you run a risk if you use them working with a deadline. But, being an amateur, I sometimes like to browse these free font sites and look for new ideas. I usually "improve" fonts I like and want to add to my collection. Which includes extra characters, character shapes, kerning, spacing and so on. You can find a few of them on my little fontsite <www.fontgrube.de/en> in the "beauty farm" section. Some of these remakes have made it to the usual freeware sites by now.

To cut a long story short: If there is a font you want to use, google for it and check the readme files that some of the free-font sites don't strip. And check the font with fontographer or fontlab first.
