I will use examples to make it simpler...
To avoid any confusion, I am using the word 'filename' to refer to the
physical name of the given file the disk media.
I recently purcahsed FF Angie 1 in Postscript format. Once uncompressed the
filenames were:
AnRg____.afm
AnRg____.inf
AnRg____.pfb
AnRg____.PFM
and so on for each weight, style etc...
It seems that this filenaming *should be* consistent throughout all the font
foundries, since researching this on, (to name a few) www.fonts.com,
www.itcfonts.com, www.myfonts.com all stated exactly the same filenames as
mine and as each other.
In this scenario (as an example), I would be printing a leaflet for a friend
with FF Angie 1 in it, which he would supply. But the files he has are:
Angie-Regular.afm
Angie-Regular.inf
Angie-Regular.pfb
Angie-Regular.pfm
I thought that these were ungeniune files (perhaps converted from Mac, or
ripped from PDF or something similiar) hence I bought the original. But
perhaps I was wrong? I tried downloading the fonts available on these
newsgroups, but they have these naming conventions of using long file names
(as above) as well. If this is simply somebody renaming them, then for what
reason? Or do they genuinely vary from different font foundries Also the
copyright information can vary on the same font. Is this just how it is from
font reseller to font reseller (i thought not) or is it somebody messing
around with it?
I am also interested in this from a Mac perspective, if anybody has any
information. Since I thought that perhaps these fonts were converted from
Mac, I researched the Mac filenames. And these also rarely coincide with the
*original* files that can be bought from these foundries.
Thanks again...
Andy
