Double status bar in VICE

How come the status bar in VICE is "double", i.e. it has two lines --
the first one contains virtual floppy disk drive "LED" and head
position, plus the "Attached .... to device #8" messages, while the
joystick indicators are in the second line?
A bug or a placeholder for other status messages I haven't encountered
yet?
