program must do something useful, IMHO.
It said "hello". If that's not useful, why does everybody do it so often? :)
I think it got the other way around .... there are so much more help
info in .NET 2003 (the .NET environment, plus backwards compatibility
to almost everything there was before) that unless you really focus on
what area you want to look for help in, .NET 2003 usually returned
many more help topics for a search phrase than Visual Studio 6 did.
Yes, but usually the item at the top of the list is the Win32 API call
or DirectX interface you wanted. In VC6 you get lots of "helpful"
articles that talk about stuff, and the API docs are mixed in later.
I think some of the filtering stuff works better in the .NET IDEs, e.g.
you can strip out the VB and FoxPro stuff.
I've found some useful examples on codeproject.com. Some things, like
adding images to a Rich Edit control, require arcane and generally
undocumented knowledge. You know the documentation is bad when you have
to consult books with names like "The Undocumented PC" to read blocks off
of a floppy drive in Win98. (Yes, there are documented ways of doing that,
but if the disk isn't formatted for FAT then Win98 will keep trying to
get the disk volume information... on every block read.)
I remember when the IBM PC first came out and didn't ship with much in
the way of documentation. The Apple II came with the BASIC manual, DOS
manual, system reference manual... everything about the computer. I
couldn't fathom getting a computer and not getting some details on how
to poke at it.
