xfontsel is for old x fonts. Or it was, last I checked. It's in package
x11-utils.
The nearly-released tk 8.5 uses antialiased Xft-style fonts (finally -
tk apps suddenly look about 10 years younger). But (a) it's not in
debian/etch IIRC and (b) no idea if "tkfont" has been updated to handle
new-style fonts anyway.
Really, at least gtk + Xft builds of emacs should probably pop up the
gtk font selection dialog for font name customize. Bit of a drag that
you currently have to type in a Xft font name in the first place, but
it is still developing code...
