vi problem on rhel4 ..

Hello,

I am on rhel4 and used the default vi 6.3 version.
I recently upgraded my vi editor to latest one :7.1

The problem that i am experiencing is that when i open vi,there is no
indication of the modes that i change like insert, visual etc..but i do
get into such modes, only their indication at the lower left corner is
not displayed.

Another thing is that while in insert mode i cant use the arrow keys
to move the cursor as on using any of the arrow keys,A,B,C,D gets
written all in new lines...

Please suggest what to do..

And while i type vi at command prompt without any file name, there is
an option that says to type :set nocp for vim defaults..

when i put this command the insert ,visual modes are shown in the
lower left corner, and the cursor also moves as it should...

but upon further opening of the vi editor the same problem persists.

Kindly help me in sorting this out.

ThankYou very much,

Regards.
