I haven't had much choice. Though I probably could install Emacs
in my local directory on one system, I have to login to quite a
few different systems. While I don't have to edit files on all
of them, I may have to edit files on a few of them. Vi, and by
that I mean the UNIX implementation of Vi, is the only full
screen editor available on all of the platforms that I am using.
I could put Emacs on my desktop, but I use the desktop as little
as possible because the rest of my environment is a mix of UNIX
and Linux systems.

So... I continue to use Vi on the UNIX systems at work, WinVi on
the Windows system at work, and mostly GNU Emacs (with some NEdit
and many other editors on occasion) back at home on my desktop
Linux system. I do News with Gnus, which runs as a Emacs Lisp
program from GNU Emacs.
