Baseband Pulse Shaping QPSK in IQ

Hello,
I would appreciate it anyone can help me understanding what I need to do
for this basic pulse shaping problem.
I am doing a simulation of a QPSK system and I understand the basic
concept of pulse shaping and matching filtering. I am doing the
simulation in Matlab and my transmitter is a QPSK transmitter. After
symbol mapping from data to I and Q pairs of symbols, how do I construct
pulse shaping filters for I and Q paths? I used rcosfir function to
generate root raised cosine coefficients but can I simply filter each I &
Q path with the same filter coefficients? That doesn't quite make sense
to me but then how do I construct this filter for I and Q?
Sorry if this question sounds dumb. Even though I have learned these
concepts in text book, I am putting what I learned into practices and also
learning matlab simulations.
Thank you
.
