I suspect a language problem. Up to now, he's been hanging out with the wrong crowd, namely autocratic professors. Granted, even if it's the only way he knows, it's time he learned the finer points of English. But remember, in many dictionaries, "expect" is given as a synonym for "hope". As for "you people", he for sure isn't a regular yet. How about "youse guys"?
