I believe you have it backwards. If you mix your signal's center
frequency to baseband then it may be low pass filtered. If you don't,
you'll have to utilize a band pass filter, which would require more
taps for equivalent ripple and rolloff.

To be pedestrian about this, I assume the low pass filter would then be
reflected about the origin so that it would be applied to the entire band
of interest, yes?
