Programmable MP3 players?

Hi. While I don't have any application in mind, I'm curious to know if
there are any small audio devices, such as MP3 players, where it's
possible to write a new OS from scratch to make it do things other than
what it was originally designed to do. Clearly it would be a case of
both knowing the various APIs or having compilers available, and for
pretty well everything to be done in software, rather than dedicated
hardware.

Any such devices?

Cheers,

Ross-c
