I've got a Cisco 877 router/DSL modem running IOS 12.3.

Setting up EasyVPN server seems straightforward, but it appears to only
work with the Cisco VPN client. Is there some way to set up the router
as a VPN server that will work with other clients, such as the built-in
VPN software on Windows XP?

Yes.

I've looked for instructions, but all I can find are instructions for
setting up an EasyVPN server, or setting up a peer-to-peer VPN
connection with another Cisco box.

Set up a vpn group for pptp dialin.

Sorry, I don't know the sequence of configuration commands, but see
