Is it a mistake that it can only terminate and/or initiate 3DES IPsec tunnels whille being able to encrypt data via AES algorithm?
Yes, it's some unfortunate mispelling. 870 series have on-board VPN accelerator capable of both DES/3DES and AES hardware acceleration, thus IPsec tunnels can be encrypted with hardware acceleration with either of them.
