Agere V92 SoftModem Prevents Programs From Loading

Hey everyone! I have a pretty tricky problem I hope someone has a
suggestion for:

I have an Agere SoftModem that, every couple of connections, creates
problems on my computer. After connecting, I can't open any programs. I
can double click the icons and my cursor will show that it's thinking,
but then nothing happens. If I disconnect my modem, the line is dropped
but the icon still remains in my taskbar. If I wait about 5 minutes the
icon goes away and I can reconnect. After reconnecting, all the
programs I tried loading suddenly appear. This is an extrememly
frustrating problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

RJ

PS: This is a new computer with a dual core processor, so I know CPU
speed is not an issue here.
