Now here's my problem...I can go into First Gear (the netgear program)
and I can test my ISP settings and it dials up and works fine....but
since this is a router and not a modem its not a piece of hardware IN
my computer but rather on my network....so I'm kinda at a loss in
windows XP how to set this up to dial out.

I did a new network conneciton set up for broadband with the correct
connection info (phone, user, pwd) but it never gets to my ISP...it
never even dials. I watch the routers channels and they never even
dial out.

Are you talking to the router with a serial cable and Hyperterminal,
or via telnet and your network? To get to the internet, you need to
connect to the router via ethernet, and you need the router's address
put into the "Gateway" setting in Windows TCP/IP setup.

If your PC is set to "acquire network address automatically", the 328
can provide a compatible address for your PC, and insert itself as
gateway, via DHCP (look through the router menus, I forget where it
is). Be aware you may have to "repair", or "disable" and "enable" your
connection in Windows, or restart your PC, to cause a new DHCP query.
Or you can manually configure both ends.

Once that is set up, you don't "dial" in the dialup networking sense.
You just request a web page or your mail, and the router figures out
it needs to connect, and does it automatically. Takes about eight
seconds, which may be too long for some modern programs. As we used to
say, "ISDN is _almost_ like really being on the net."

Oh, if you pay by the minute, be sure to watch that the router
_disconnects_ automatically... There are lots of things that will
keep it up forever.
