I live in an area where dialup is my only option so I've had a NetgearChris,
XM128 for about 2 years. I remember it being a pain to get going on
XP but I've been running it fine during that time...until a few days
ago. We had a storm and no known lightning but the power did flicker
off once.
The next morning, no phones but I have internet. But that night,
neither. I'm assuming either the modem is fried or there is a windows
issue.
As of today the phone company has tested all the way to the inside
jack and says its all good.
The modem shows up on my computer as a Zyxel. I can query the modem
under Device Mgr but it takes like 5 minutes...I notice in the output
log that there are a couple of recieved notes to "reset the modem".
I konw i've done it before but I can't figure out how to get AT
commands to work in Hyper Terminal but I know its responding to the
above query.
In the manual it says to reset to push the Data/Voice button while
turning it on...problem is there are NO buttons on this unit (go
figure).
Anyone have any ideas?
I haven't tried reinstalling it yet but I guess that is next.
I don't have any direct experience with the Netgear XM128, but I did
have a similar thing happen a couple of years ago with my 3Com 3C892A
ISDN router. Turned out to be transient damage to the 3Com, a couple of
8-port ethernet switches and one network card. Swapped in a spare
3C892, and replaced both switches and the network card and things worked
fine. I added a Tripp Lite DSUT1CSU surge protector between by 3Com and
the telco plus DNET1's at both ends of the Cat5 wire that connects the
switch/hubs at the far ends of the house and haven't had any problems
since.
While I can understand trying to reload the software, from your
description it doesn't sound like that will fix your problem unless you
are having other problems with your XP system. Unfortunately, I
suspect that you may have to replace your XM128. If you can't find a
replacement for your XM128, I can recommend the 3Com 3C892A which
although discontinued by 3Com can be acquired off eBay for next to
nothing.
Good luck.
