How do I do compressed dumps to a remote server??

Hi All,

I am on ASE 12.5.3 ESD 7 on both hp UX and windows.

Here is what I am trying to do. I want to make a database and
transcation log to a different server and make sure it goes across the
wire compressed.

I tried using the at remote_server syntax of backup server but
realized the compression is done at the remote backup server meaning
that the uncompressed stream is passed across the WAN. That takes too
long. I also found CR 431904 which states that compression does not
take place. It says this is fixed in 12.5.4. Does this mean that if I
used the with "compression = " syntax with 12.5.4 I will get the
compression I am looking for ?

The second option that I am trying is to map drives and then dump to
the mapped drive (or UNC names ) using the local backup server. So the
local backup server is used and it will compress the dumps. However, I
am not seeing the results I expect. Even though the file size when
dumped to the remote drive is small the time taken to dump is the same
for uncompressed and compressed.

I need some ideas. I have a case logged with Sybase support too but I
would to know if any of you has done this before.

Thanks,
Harki
