maintenance window is weekly for a few hours
think that the problem is fragmentation due to the ammount of inserts
and deletes ( not random but in large chunks )
Dont know if its DOL or ALLPAGES, would that make a difference?

I have an old version of sybase installed that can not be changed.
The version I have precludes partitioning of the db.
The table is absolutely enormous in terms of row count / daily updates
and deletes which leaves the index very unbalanced and sluggish.
Dropping and recreating the index takes far too long to be practical.
Help I don't know what I should do :(
Thanks,
Rick.
Well, start by speaking more in specifics -
what is the actual version of ASE? (select @@version)
how big is the table (sp_spaceused)
Do you have a daily or weekly maintenance window? How big is it?
Is there any time you can get a bigger window (say on banking
holidays, etc.)?
Is the table DOL or ALLPAGES?
Do you think the problems with the index are more due to fragmentation
or inaccurate statistics? What is your evidence?
What are the barriers to updating ASE?
