alignment of columns is obviously a requirement too, from what I said

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't that mean that you have to
pull down the whole result set before you can determine the width of
the columns?
While that could be feasible for a few rows, it's definitely not
something that I can envision for normal use - however, if you want to
submit a patch that adds this functionality you're welcome, and I will
definitely look at it.
I suppose that an alternative would be to add some formating commands
similar to what SQLPlus has so that you could limit the width of a
particular column to something that seems better than the actual width.
