Horrible (8x) Client-Server Performance

System Setup
-------------
OS's - RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 3.0
DB Server - 8 logical xeon 2.8ghz cpu, 16gb ram
App Server- 8 logical xeon 2.8ghz cpu, 8gb ram
Fibre Channel SAN housing the database
Our main program - MFG/PRO
Situation: Running a report, on the database server, connected in
shared memory, takes 'X' amount of time. Running that same report on
the Application server connecting to the DB server via client-server
over a gigabit connection, takes anywhere from 5X to 8X the time.
We have eliminated network to be the constraint by connecting both
servers with a crossover cable.
What exactly is progress doing behind the scenes that is taking so long
in the client-server method? We might have a report take 30mins, yet
only show about 7mins of CPU usage.
Our sources say that we should be experienceing a 3X performance
slowdown via client-server, not 5X-8X.
I would be glad to post db/client parameters if anyone has any
ideas...
Thanks
