in reply to several, we are using d3's hot backup and we are backing
up to disk.
when backing up to disk (disk array via fiber channel) we are backing
up 20 gigs/hour. does this seem a reasonable time frame?- Hide quoted text -

What is the underlying OS? and Array configuration? Is this a SAN? I
assume your RAM is maxed out to D3's limit?
We are backing up @ 11Gb/hr using RAID-10 & SAS drives on a Linux
server, so the raw speed seems "OK", but also indicates that without
doing some "really funky" stuff, max size for a traditional fully
backed-up system would be around 1/2 TB (and you would also need at
least 2 x replicated servers, which I suppose classifies as "funky"
anyway [thought Visage.DRS can do this]) --> if you are using hot
backup (and are happy with it), then "best" bet, if you are using a
SAN, could be to drop the backup machine, take a snapshot (worth
adding additional disks to do so!!) and then restart.
This would require manual intervention, BUT, you you would want to be
around anyway to baby-sit the hot backup restart. As it wouldn't
impact "live" system, shouldn't be an issue doing in the day, and
multiple times to be "safer" :-)
