Re: Press release: BookMasters go live on OpenQM

To boil it down to the essential oil -

With QM you get support.
With QM you get performance
With QM you get changes to keep up with changing times
With D3 you get ignored - and pay a lot more money for it.

I just ported a 20+ year old system that has run on many incarnations. This
port was from jBase to QM but this system was ported from D3 to jBase in
2003. There were problems but all but one of the problems were my lack of
any experience or knowledge with the Prime Information approach as opposed
to the classical Pick approach. Once I RTFM those went away. Even before I
buckled down and studied the manual Martin patiently guided me to the
answers. The one problem that was caused by the way QM does something as
opposed to the way others have chosen to do it will probably not be a
problem to most. We once had a programmer who liked to use
FOR X = 1 TO X + 1 UNTIL DYNARRA<X> = ''
X is an undefined variable in QM while every other version we have used
apparently initialized X when it was first seen in the FOR statement.
Nobody should use such a construct anyway so that's probably not going to
pose a problem for most people.

I wonder why anyone is willing to accept the non-support from TL when he
could port to QM so easily. Not automatic, not in five minutes, but easily.

I second that. The only thing that prevents our migration is the lost time
on the unknowns, which this would definitely help.

Jeff and Ross,

I will be happy to share my experiences. Also for the record - I am
always available for consulting for those that would prefer someone
else to do the conversion.

Are either of you going to be at Spectrum? If so, look me up.

Eugene
